Tourism and WoM already walk hand in hand in my mind- think Trip Advisor for hotel recommendations or local What’s On pages for trusted hot spots, but tourism has recently gone to a whole new interactive level with social media.
Tourism Toronto now allows locals and travelers to engage with their city and share their personal recommendations in an online space.
Crispin Porter + Bogusky recently launched a real time tourism guide for the city of Toronto. The site utilises digital resources from Twitter, Foursquare and even blogs to give a to-the minute update of what’s happening in the city.
The website has a street cam which allows users to view what’s happening at Toronto’s hot spots and see the latest tweets and trends. In each hot spot you can see what people are saying and where people are checking in, the site also offers deals on food, entertainment and accommodation.
Anyone can contribute themselves via the Twitter hashtag #torontotrending or by checking in on Foursquare which appears instantly.
It’s an innovative idea that utilises WoM principles with digital resources to give locals a way of engaging with the places and things they love about their city while sharing recommendations for others. As a traveler to an unfamiliar city I would definitely trust a locals recommendation for hot spots and local trends.
This is a great campaign that really uses WoM recommendations to promote tourism in Toronto. The locals are already experiencing their area and talking about it, Tourism Toronto has simply created a platform for them to share their experiences in an interactive way.
